I think that the guild lord has a limit to how much damage he can take at the beginning.

Well, I am not sure.
basically, the number of teams actually capable of winning this event is really pretty small, it between a small handful of teams, five or six at the most at a guess. These teams will run farming builds (triple smite, spike, etc), and good luck to them, I'm not sure that the reward is really worth 72 hours of solid grind, but then, I'm a scrub, so what do I know?
i have no doubt that there will be another 500 teams who all think, for some bizarre reason, that they actually have a chance. These guys will probably run farm builds too, even after the point at which they cant actually qualify, which for most of them will come within the first few hours.
Me? I'm an awkaward bugger, and my inclination is to run anti farming holding builds and p*** off as many people as I possibly can and hope for lots of enemy rage quits. i think that would be highly amusing

I think double and triple smites will be the way.
Watch 4 GvG matches one of the 4 is almost certainly a smite and there's no faster way to drop inexperienced guilds.
Quantity over quality and all that.

If you were preparing for smiters wouldn't you just love well of profane
I'm hoping their will be less gimmicks and more quality balanced (and that doesn't mean your allowed to put smiters in balanced).
I was happy to see the return of e-surgers and multiple mesmers in a balanced in the recent playoff, as well as some decent assassin gank teams. I'm hoping for more of the same.

Basically, any build with a high powered and/or front loaded offense. The desire will be to win matches quickly to get in as many matches as possible.

The shortened seasons already have driven that point home especially as they wind toward ladder lock...

Do you remember the steamroll build that Rift ran a couple of seasons ago? That is a fun one that I would like to see make a comeback.

Is this the one that includes a fast cast fire and a death/minion necro?

I think the one that Billiard is reffering to was something like this:
Two E/R Fire nukers with Glyph of Renewal, Energising Winds and pets.
One W/R (Axe?) with a pet.
One R/W thumper with a pet.
One Death Necro with Minions and Tainted/Rotting.
Two Monks.
Flag runner (Not to sure on the build of this one?)
A nasty as hell build if you are unprepared, but if you have enough interrupts to keep the Fire Eles fairly well shut down it's manageable.
But yes; Triple Smite ftw.

Especially with the MM nerf (not being able to keep them alive without killing yourself, the limit of 10 doesn't hurt too badly) You can still go with minions, but it's a lot more difficult to run, and easier for the other team to manage. Plus, before, if the other team split, you had an army of minions to go roll over their guild lord, now if they split, you're in trouble.

I seriously doubt ganking builds or 2 assassin builds will be ran much in the 72 hours. Those builds are designed to win games that go to VoD, the goal in the 72 hours will be to win fast or lose fast. I doubt any team seriously gunning for the ladder will be using a build that takes 30 minutes to win a game.

When we ran triple smite we loved it when people would split on us. In a 4-4 split we'd walk into their base and eliminate whatever monks they sent back in a few seconds, then beat them in the gank race to the lord. Against a 6-2 split, either try the same thing or send back a smiter + thumper, since those are a nice and relatively self-sufficent split duo.
As far as what we'll be running, there was talk of a 4-monk-4-ritualist build designed to camp the lord and go to VoD every single time. Basically, try to see how many games we could win just by the other team ragequitting because we've taken too much time out of their rating farming. We probably won't actually do it though.

Even if teams don't think they will be able to qualify for the 1st place spot this event, I think A-net has nicely discouraged this type of griefing by providing double faction and easier Champion points just during the 72 hours.
